9 months +

Words and book by Yaz Leigh:

‘9 Months +’ is a book that began in the Notes app on my phone and often at early hours of the morning, when the troubles from the day kept me awake.

Whilst pregnant, I typed my thoughts out as to help me sleep. It became a kind of ritual for my own sanity and continued well after my son was born.

It tracked the difficulties that I experienced as an autistic woman, particularly in early pregnancy when my body felt its most foreign to me.  It tracked the duality of personhood and guilt that I experienced in completing a Masters and working part-time when my son was only 7 months old. It also tracked the mundane and the heartwarming moments of being a first-time parent. The joy of experiencing the world through his eyes and the love that felt so easy to give.

In turning these thoughts and observations into a book, I realised that the painful and dark moments of mind were temporary. It didn’t feel it at the time. It didn’t make the journey any easier but it has allowed me to forgive myself and see myself in a better light.
